Hall of Fame
The National Continental Societies, Incorporated recognizes Continentals past and present for dedicated unselfish work to improve the standards of all youth with special needs, putting self aside to help foster and promote better health, education, employment, recreation and Arts and Humanities, for every youth regardless of race, creed or origin.
Continental Societies, Incorporated bestows this high honor to Continentals, one from each region for a permanent place to have and hold in history; as torchbearers and beacon light sharers.
2009 Eastern Region Recipient
Continental Gloria Madeline Campbell serves as an outstanding leader, role model for children, youth, young adults and women. She is quite a personable, highly respected, hard worker, extremely professional, and has been and continues to be very active with the Continental Societies, Inc., on the local, regional and national level and with community projects. For over 27 years, Continental Campbell has done a remarkable job always going beyond the extra mile to get the best job done in Continental.
On the local level, Continental Campbell has served as: recording secretary; parliamentarian; and chapter president. She has chaired the following committees on the local level: nominating; constitution/bylaws; 45th National Conclave (Baltimore Host Chapter); 2005-50th Anniversary Year of Baltimore Chapter; Continental Memorial Award; Education; Campership Committee; and Orientation of New Members Workshop. Continental Campbell has also actively served and worked on all committees in the chapter.
On the Regional level, Continental Campbell has served as recoding secretary and scholarship chair.
On the National Level Continental Campbell has served as National Membership Chair, Nominating Committee Chair and facilitated Conclave Workshops.
Continental Campbell has attended 19 regional meetings and 20 national conclaves.
Even though Continental Campbell is very much involved with Continentals, she finds time for her civic duties and activities which include: member of Baltimore Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and member of Retired Teachers’ Association. Continental Campbell is an active member of New All Saints Roman Catholic Church for 45 years and has served as president of the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Metropolitan Center for Performing Arts, Inc., marriage preparation for engaged couples, member of the New All Saints Mass Choir, member of the parish development committee, member of Parish Council and Finance Committee, All Saints75th Anniversary Celebration Fund Raising Chair, facilitator of Archdiocese of Baltimore RENEW program, Archdiocese of Baltimore Priest Screening Committee, received the Mother Mary Lange Award for Leadership, and National Black Catholic Conference Group Facilitator (hosted by Baltimore).
Continental Campbell has been married to Continental Guy Joseph Campbell for 51 years.
2009 Mid-Atlantic Region Recipient
Continental Gwendolyn Milligan Johnson implemented the annual leadership workshop in August in which the year’s programs are planned, officers and new committee chairs are trained and special projects are discussed and decided upon. She was instrumental in leading the chapter in celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2001 culminating with an Anniversary Gala. Being a two-term president and vice president, Continental Johnson’s dynamic leadership increased the Norfolk/Virginia Beach Chapter’s membership by being supportive, leading by example, keeping members up-to-date of chapter procedures and activities and encouraging participation in regional and national conferences.
Continental Johnson was the drawing force in implementing all HEER activities within the chapter for the past 10 years. She took upon herself to prepare the HEER annual Reports not only during her vice presidency but also during the presidency. She also prepared all HEER displays, which appeared at conclave and regional conference. Continental Johnson steps in, without fanfare, whenever there is a void in an activity, chapter meeting or program.
At the local level Continental Johnson has also help the offices of recording secretary, financial secretary, treasurer, historian and recorder. She is ending a four year term as regional financial secretary. Continental Johnson has attended twenty regional conferences and twenty National Conclaves.
Continental Johnson taught Art for 36 years in the Norfolk Public School System and classroom teacher in Fauquier County, Virginia.
Continental Gwendolyn Johnson has received a number of awards: The Florence Blount Leadership Awards, 2005; St. John’s Service Award, Service Award, Les Gemmes, Inc. 1990 Apple for the Teacher, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. 1990, Excellence in Teaching Award Young Park School 1990, All-City Team, Norfolk Public School, 1985.
Continental Johnson belongs to a number of Fraternal and Social organizations, Excelsior Chapter 82 Order of Eastern Star, Arabia Court #23 Daughter of Isis (omen’s Auxiliary of the Shrines), Virginia Beach Chapter of the Les Gemmes, Inc., and the Norfolk/Virginia Beach Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc.
Continental Johnson joined St. John’s under Rev. Shield. She is a member of the Chesapeake Fellowship Group, 2nd Vice President of Stewardess Board #2, Chairperson of the Flossie McIntyre Committee, a member of the Lay Organization and a member of Nannie C. Phelps Missionary Society.
Continental Johnson is married to James Edward Johnson. They celebrated their fifth anniversary in June 2008.
2009 Midwest Western Region Recipient
Continental Jean Newkirk serves as an outstanding leader and role model for children, youth, young adults and women. She is quite an amiable, highly respected, hard worker; extremely professional, and is very active with the Continental Societies, Inc., at both the local and regional levels. She is also actively involved in numerous community projects. Continental Newkirk is a charter member and has given 31 years of service in the Chicago Chapter where she has done an extraordinary job for the Organization.
She is the proud mother of two sons and six grandchildren.
At the local level, Continental Newkirk has served as recording secretary and treasurer. She has chaired the following committees: education/employment, anniversary dinner dance, scholarship awards luncheon and the Tea for Tots fashion show. She was also chair of the registration/souvenir journal for the 52nd National Conclave (Chicago Host Chapter). She served as co-chair of the membership committee and fundraising. Continental Newkirk is a reading literacy volunteer at LaRabida Children’s Hospital.
At the regional level, Continental Newkirk has served as treasurer. She is the Regional Director Elect for the Midwest-Western Region.
At the national level, she sings in the Continental Chorale.
Even though she is very much involved with Continentals, she still finds time for her civic duties and other activities which include: member of the Chicago Chapter, Chicago Business Educator’s Association, National Association of Female Executives, Episcopal Churchwomen and the National Council of Negro Women.
Continental Newkirk attends the Messiah – St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church where she is a member of the Vestry. She serves on the Board of Directors of Messiah’s Development Center Foundation and is the Assistant Director of the Summer Camp Program.
Continental Jean Newkirk retired from the Chicago Public School System in 2008 following 38 ½ years as a teacher. She has received numerous community service awards.
2009 Southeastern Region Recipient
As a teacher, mother, grandmother and a loyal member of the Atlanta Chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated, Continental Nancy L. Hope shares lessons learned along a sometimes, uncertain road to now. As a teacher, she hopes she has inspired many students to become teachers, doctors and other noted professions. Her mission is to impress upon those who passed her way to become successful in their chosen endeavor.
Continental Hope has been committed to helping others. She has been instrumental in helping a number of students from the schools where she worked to find their place in society. There are a number of students that she has kept in touch with since they have graduated from institutions of higher learning.
Presently, Continental Hope tutor area students in grades 3rd and 5th every Saturday and Sunday. She feels it has been most rewarding. Some of the students were so grateful that they wrote about her for Black History last year. To her surprise, the students had her nestled between Frederick Douglas and Thurgood Marshall.
At the local level, Continental Hope has served as president, vice-president, financial secretary, treasurer, public relations officer and chaplain.
On the regional level, Continental Hope served as financial secretary and is presently serving as treasurer.
On the national level, she has served on the Hall of Fame Committee, the finance committee and the public relations committee. Continental Hope served as chair of the 1998 Conclave help in Atlanta.
Continental Hope is a retired teacher and is involved with AARP and her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. She serves on the board of director of S. T. O. P. (Students Talking Out Problems), at Morehouse College. Continental Hope received the Community Service Award from the Atlanta Chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated.
